Which AI companies are there in OWL and NRW?
In short: The overview lists 634 AI providers with a documented location in North Rhine-Westphalia, 303 of them in East Westphalia-Lippe across 51 places and 331 elsewhere in NRW. Within OWL, Bielefeld (84) and Paderborn district (82) lead. Most entries fall under enterprise AI & integration (187), industry, engineering & robotics (67) and AI strategy, adoption & governance (63). Every entry rests on the providers' own sources, last compared on 20 October 2026.

Across East Westphalia-Lippe and the rest of North Rhine-Westphalia, software houses, AI agencies and other AI service providers, consultancies and product vendors offer artificial intelligence (AI) to businesses; this register lists 634 of them with location and sources, 303 of which are in OWL.
Disclosure: The publisher is T-NEX GmbH, which offers AI software itself and has its own entry in the register. The authors, Andreas Unruh and Christoph Gembruch, are its managing directors. The register describes publicly offered services as the providers' own sources present them and is neither a ranking nor a product test. It is not complete either. We disclose relationships between T-NEX or the authors and listed providers in this box and on the provider's row, and those entries follow the same criteria as every other.
2DC is a customer of T-NEX: for A5Hub, a brand of 2DC GmbH, T-NEX has worked on an application for project portfolio management. One of the co-authors previously had a project relationship with OPTIMAITE. Co-author Christoph Gembruch worked at Sopra Steria Next until July 2026.
Which companies does the register include?
- An official company page describes an AI offering for customers, whether a product, project work or consulting. Companies that mention AI only as an internal development tool are not included.
- A location in North Rhine-Westphalia is documented by the legal notice (Impressum), the commercial register or an official location page, and each row states its type. Registered office means the seat entered in the register. Business address is the address from the legal notice where no register entry cited on the row confirms the seat there. Branch means that the head office is in another town.
- Each company counts once. Company, product and former brand names are reconciled, and each entry has exactly one primary focus and one offering form.
- Pure research institutions and location landing pages without evidence of a location are left out. Entries whose source could no longer be reached at the latest check are held back until they have been checked again.
In this register, OWL means the Detmold administrative region: the city of Bielefeld and the districts of Gütersloh, Herford, Höxter, Lippe, Minden-Lübbecke and Paderborn. All other entries belong to the rest of NRW and are grouped by administrative region. What counts is the documented location in North Rhine-Westphalia; where a company's head office is outside the state, its row says so.
AI tools assisted with research, source matching and translation; an entry is released only after human review, following the rules on our editorial standards and responsibility page.
Which task should AI take on?
The providers are spread over seven pages, ordered by the task for which they describe their offering. Each entry appears exactly once, under its primary focus.

Common questions about AI providers in OWL and NRW
Which AI companies are there in Paderborn?
After Bielefeld, the city of Paderborn has the most OWL entries in the register, and further providers come from towns across the district such as Büren and Salzkotten. The city counts 59 entries, the district as a whole 82. The largest group consists of firms that connect several workflows through their own applications and interfaces (Enterprise AI & integration). All names appear in the OWL section under Paderborn district, sorted by town; the full entries are on the task pages. Note the location type. A business address or branch in Paderborn does not mean that the company's registered office is there.
Which AI providers are there in Bielefeld?
Bielefeld has more entries than any other town in the register, ahead of Cologne and Paderborn: 84 entries against 82 and 59. Integration and AI strategy are represented as well as industry and engineering, and ready-made AI products are the most common offering form. The OWL section lists their names under Bielefeld. Towns in the surrounding area such as Gütersloh or Herford appear under their own districts, since Bielefeld is an independent city.
How do I find the right AI provider?
Start with the task that AI is meant to take on in the business; the seven task pages group the entries by it. Every candidate on your shortlist then gets the same workflow with sample data and an intended result. Only after that is it worth comparing functions, interfaces, review, operations, recurring costs and handover, and the project brief in the selection guide collects the information you need. How the system copes with your exceptions only becomes clear with your own data.
How can I tell whether an AI provider is reputable?
An entry in this register is not a seal of quality; it only shows a described offering and a documented location. Check the legal notice and the commercial register yourself to see who is liable and where the registered office is. Ask for references you may call. A demo should run on your own data. Before signing, clarify where data are processed, which models and subcontractors are involved and whether a data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR is in place. Be wary of fixed accuracy figures quoted without a test on your data.
How current is the register, and how often is it checked?
All entries have been checked against the providers' sources; the most recent check dates from 20 October 2026, and the review date appears on each row and in the download. Whenever the register is updated, the affected entries are checked again, as is any entry for which someone reports an error. We do not commit to a fixed schedule. Offerings, names and locations can change between checks, so with an older review date it is worth looking at the linked source. New entries are added with a dated note.
How does a company get into the register, and how is an entry corrected?
Meeting the criteria above is all it takes: an AI offering for customers described on the company's own pages and a documented location in NRW. No application is needed, and payment or a business relationship plays no part. Reports of errors or missing companies go to the contact page for companies; a link to the source helps with the check. The row is then updated and given a new review date.
How do I get from the register to a shortlist?
A useful shortlist comes from making every candidate show what it can do on the same workflow. Demos on the vendor's own data help little here, because your data and exceptions do not appear in them. The table matches typical starting points with an entry route. Next to each is the question that should be answered before you commission anyone, so that nobody finds out mid-project that the chosen route does not fit.
| Starting point | Suitable entry | Clarify before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| A clearly defined standard need, such as translation or appointment booking | Evaluate a product | Can the product handle your cases, and how do data get in and out? |
| Several existing systems with manual handovers between them | Integration and automation | Which handovers will run automatically, and who steps in when a case stalls? |
| Custom business logic, specific roles or permissions | Custom development | Does the proposal state which functions are delivered, how acceptance works and who maintains the code afterwards? |
| Plenty of ideas but no assessed use case yet | Consulting or a focused pilot | Which result on the trial workflow decides between expanding and stopping? |
Product, integration or custom development
- Standard product: A product for the task already exists. The work is mostly configuration of your roles and workflows, with little development, and this holds as long as your cases stay within the limits the vendor has designed for.
- Integration: The systems are in place, but the workflow breaks between them. Interfaces and data matching connect the steps, approvals included, and an AI function often sits exactly where someone currently retypes data.
- Custom development: If neither a product nor an integration covers the requirements, an application is built for the specific business process. Acceptance and maintenance then belong in the contract from the start, as does handover of the code. The routes can also be combined.
What belongs in the project brief
- Workflow: A typical case and an exception, each with the intended result and described in the language of the business team.
- Data and sources: Sample data, how current they are and who may access them. Whether the data may be used for this purpose needs settling in advance.
- Connections: Source and target systems with the data fields involved, plus the feedback a system needs once processing is done.
- Review and approval: How do you recognise a correct result? Who checks it, and what happens when it is wrong?
- Operations and ownership: Hosting, models and services used, maintenance and support. Plus a named contact on both sides.
- Cost and handover: What setup and ongoing operation cost and how much input is needed from your side. Also record how data or the system will later pass to you or another provider.
In the podcast Back to the Future of AI, Felix Schlenther, founder of the AI consultancy AI FIRST, describes many small use cases his team had built, each of which solved one task well. The team then realised that the efficiency gain seeps away again when the process contains a gate. Such a gate can be a recurring meeting where a decision has to be made before the next step can go ahead. With clients, his team currently breaks the process down into individual steps and reassembles it.
Und aus diesem neu zusammengebauten Prozess dann verschiedene Use Cases rausziehen und schauen, wie kriegt man die mit der Zeit verbunden.
Translation: And then, from this newly reassembled process, pull out different use cases and see how you get them connected over time.
So ask each provider on your shortlist to demonstrate a complete case, from the data source through review of the result to the next step in the workflow. That shows whether a product is enough, an integration is missing or something has to be built.
About the publisher: when is T-NEX an option?
T-NEX mainly suits projects where a standard function on its own is not enough, because a chatbot or knowledge search needs to be connected to existing systems, extended with your own business logic or built into a workflow with approvals. If a specialist product already covers your need in full, it is usually the shorter route. The task pages show who offers such products. A focused AI pilot fits when a use case first needs testing; its criteria for expanding or stopping are agreed in advance.
Five T-NEX offers fit almost every task in this guide: custom software development, workflow automation, AI chatbot, AI knowledge management and AI reporting. What they do for the tasks of a page is set out there in the About the publisher box after the entries, together with the offers that suit only those tasks, such as social media AI for customer service or document AI for documents and administration.
T-NEX GmbH, with its registered office in Horn-Bad Meinberg in the district of Lippe and an office in Paderborn, publishes this register and is listed in it, in alphabetical order under Enterprise AI & integration. It develops software for companies. Its own AI solutions include an AI chatbot that answers from your own content with source references, AI knowledge management and AI reporting, which turns a natural-language question into a dashboard on the connected data; all three are available. The software for inspection services is in use with its first customer, AP Prüfservice, and workflow automation with approvals exists as a concept with a demo.
- AI chatbot Available, solution built from components
- AI knowledge management Available, solution built from components
- AI reporting Available, platform module
- Software for inspection services In use, standard product, with first customer AP Prüfservice
- Workflow automation Concept/demo, solution built from components
- Custom software development Service
- AI pilot Service

Enterprise AI & integration
187 providers, 103 in OWL
Rather than solving a single specialist task, the providers in this focus area connect several workflows through their own applications, AI agents and interfaces to ERP, CRM or document storage. The focus area also takes in every provider that describes several fields of use with equal weight. With 187 entries, 103 of them in OWL, it is the largest focus area in the register and is therefore split alphabetically across two pages. Specialist applications, for example for accounting or machine maintenance, are listed under their own field instead.
Selection question: Which systems and workflows are connected, and who operates the overall solution once the project is complete?
For the demo or the offer:
- Which interfaces to our systems already exist, which will only be built during the project, and who adapts them when a system version changes?
- Who notices a case that gets stuck between two systems, and where is it logged?
- Do the code, configuration and prompts belong to us once the project ends, and how would a handover to another provider work?
The entries are on two pages: Integration, 0 to I (93) · Integration, J to Z (94)
How was the register compiled?
For each entry, the provider's sources were used to check whether an AI offering for customers is described, where the location is and what type it is, and whether the register text claims only what the source supports. Offering pages, legal notices, the commercial register and official location pages count as sources. Press reports, directories and other third-party pages are not treated as primary sources; where used, they appear on the row as a third-party source with their domain.
The entries of the first edition were researched and checked against their sources on 14 and 15 October 2026. A second check followed, up to 19 October 2026. Among other things, it found a relocated registered office and business addresses presented as registered offices; those rows have been corrected. Further providers were added on 19 and 20 October 2026, researched by the same criteria and checked against their sources; the most recent check dates from 20 October 2026. Where a company has since merged, its website can no longer be reached or its offering can no longer be documented, we hold the entry back until it has been checked again.
Which primary focus a provider receives depends on the purpose of the documented offering, not on the AI technique behind it. An assistant for machine service therefore belongs to Industry, engineering & robotics, even if it uses the same language model as a customer service chatbot. Providers that describe several fields of use with equal weight are listed under Enterprise AI & integration. Separately, each entry has one offering form: custom AI software, AI products, process automation or consulting and adoption. The classification is an editorial decision. It says nothing about a provider's other capabilities.
Quality, price, security and delivery capacity of an offering are not measured here, and neither revenue nor headcount is counted. The descriptions reflect what providers publish about themselves. T-NEX has not tested the products. Deliberately excluded are pure research institutions and companies that use AI only internally. Gaps also remain wherever a provider does not describe its offering publicly or did not turn up in the research.
For young companies, startup directories and regional founder networks were searched as well: startups.nrw, Startbase, StartupBlink, garage33 and TecUP, Founders Foundation, Scale-up.NRW, Digital Hub münsterLAND, Campus-Start-ups.NRW and STARTPLATZ. A directory listing was only a lead; a startup was included only once it met the criteria above, namely an AI offering for customers described on its own pages and a documented location. Founding location, business address and branch are kept apart. With young products, it pays to ask what is available today, meaning functions, reference applications, support and data export; the roadmap comes second.
Any current or past customer or project relationship between T-NEX and a listed provider is disclosed, as is any case where one of the authors worked there or on a project with it. The note appears in the disclosure box above and briefly on the provider's row. Inclusion, classification and description follow the same rules for these providers. Being listed is not a recommendation, and a business relationship neither helps nor hinders inclusion.
Report errors, outdated details or a missing company via our contact page for companies, ideally with the name of the entry and a link to the source. We check the report against the source, update the row and set a new review date; new entries receive a dated note. Anyone named in the register as a person, as a sole trader or in a description, can object to being named under Article 21 GDPR in the same way.
The register in numbers
These figures describe the register, not the market. Each provider is counted once per dimension, that is separately by focus area, region and offering form. These counts cannot be added together. A low count in a district does not indicate a gap in supply, because the composition also depends on how the research found companies.
